                          Film/Television Services

"
Visual Music Service (VMS) is the long-time leader in sideline and source-music contracting for feature film and television production. Sideline Musicians are a specialty; we've been doing more of this, for a longer time, than anyone else we know of.

The term "Sideline Musician" simply denotes a musician who is shown playing on film.  In most cases, this will be a real professional musician, not an actor (except for a principle role, like Jeff and Beau Bridges in
The Fabulous Baker Boys) or an "extra," or "background actor."  Sideline musicans are generally members of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) - the "musicians' union."  Most musicians who do sideline work also play on recording and scoring sessions. It's not uncommon to have the same musicians seen on film as are actually recording the score.

In the Los Angeles area, or on location, we know how to get the job done on time and on budget.  We've worked all over the U.S., so we can get great players and sideline musicians anywhere.  We can work with you on a realistic budget, and we'll be on the set to make sure there are no surprises.

VMS offers full-service music contracting:
  • Huge database of players and SAG/AFTRA vocalists
  • Recording and/or sideline (on-camera) musicians
  • On-set supervision by our staff at all times
Musicans that work with VMS are professionals in every sense.  They're expert players and artists, and they're set-smart - they know what's required to get the job done.  They arrive on time and ready to work. They can sight-read a part and record it on the set, or "fake it": that's up to you.

If you need music for your scenes, we can provide that too.  Composing, arranging, producing; vocal, instrumental.  Rock band, jazz combo, polka band, string quartet, drum corp, symphony orchestra. All kinds of music; all kinds of ensembles. Single musician: check out the lobby pianist in Poseidon.  Rock band:  Yours, Mine and Ours.  Marching band: watch our guys in Gridiron Gang.  Think we can't put together an entire symphony orchestra, from piccolo to tympany? See Red Dragon. We really can do it all.

VMS handles all AFM paperwork.  We can assist you in obtaining an AFM assumption agreement if necessary; help with conforming to the "Low Budget" agreement; explain new-use and reuse payments and all AFM-related issues.  We've worked with all the major payroll services, so we know what they need to get the checks out on time.  Need a band for the wrap party?  We'll take care of that too.

All sideline and recording musicians are vetted for employment eligibility.  We have experience with all kinds of music and musicians: classical, all pop and rock styles, hip-hop, country, ethnic, younger, older - whatever kind of music and musicians, sideline and/or recording, you may need, we can provide.

Some of our work...

Some recent gigs for VMS:

"Burlesque," starring Christina Aguilera in her film debut.  For Fall 2010 release, from Screen Gems.  Wall-to wall music in this one.

"Just Go With It," with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in a romantic comedy for Spring 2011 from Columbia. (Thanks again, Raul!)

"The Good Wife," on CBS.  2010's breakout dramatic hit, starring Julana Margulies and Christopher Noth.  Rick wrote and arranged the gospel choir sequences in the Season 1 episode #18, "Doubt." Thanks to L.A.'s best singers for their great work and help with this one, as well as to my assistant and vocal contractor and great singer Christa Gates.

Multiple episodes this season: "NAVY N.C.I.S.," on CBS; FOX's "House," NBC's "Heroes," (RIP), the CW's "90210," and more.
